The State University of New York (SUNY) is a vast system of public colleges and universities in New York State, ranking among the largest comprehensive systems in the United States. Led by Chancellor John B. King, SUNY encompasses numerous institutions, including flagship universities like Stony Brook University and the University at Buffalo. With over 91,000 employees and a budget exceeding $13 billion, SUNY offers a wide array of degree and certificate programs across its campuses. Headquartered in Albany, SUNY’s administrative reach extends to Manhattan and Washington, D.C. Its largest campus, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, spans 25,000 acres and is adjacent to the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, the system’s largest employer. Established in 1948 by Governor Thomas E. Dewey, SUNY’s expansion accelerated under Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who oversaw the construction of new facilities statewide. Notably, SUNY encompasses all state-supported higher education institutions in New York, excluding those affiliated with the City University of New York (CUNY).
